Alka Yagnik got an offer to work with AR Rahman
In an interview with Radio Nasha, Alka Yagnik told how when she got an offer to work with AR Rahman for the film ‘Roja’, she refused. Alka Yagnik said- ‘AR Rahman was a new name at that time. No one knew him especially in Bombay. He was popular in the South. He was a very young boy then. At that time I got a call from Chennai that a new musician named AR Rahman has come. He is your fan. He is writing songs for a film and he wants you and Kumar Sanu to sing the entire sound track.’
Why did you reject the offer?
Alka further said- ‘But the problem was that they wanted me to come immediately. But, my dates were booked for a long time and the fact is that I had worked so much with the musicians in Bombay and had built such a good relationship that I did not want to leave them. Apart from this, I did not know who AR Rahman was. I did not know his capabilities.’
‘I felt very embarrassed…’
Alka Yagnik further told that she worked with AR Rahman next. She said, ‘The next time I worked with Rahman, as soon as he met me, he said that you did not sing my old songs. I felt very embarrassed, I wanted to bury myself inside the ground. It was completely my loss.’
